De har akkurat fått det så smått tilbakeholdne norske publikummet til å danse av seg Mariusgenserne sine. En sceneopptreden det så å si er umulig å toppe, men Otis hadde ikke vært soulkonge hvis han ikke hadde hatt et par ess i ermet.
Når han bryter ut i «My Girl» ser det ut som om det paralyserte publikumet er i ferd med å begynne å grine.
NRK-opptak
Det er førti år siden, men heldigvis var NRK tilstede. Og når man nå ser konsertopptaket på dvd-en de nylig slapp i samarbeid med Universal, «Stax-Volt Records: Respect Yourself - The Stax Records Story/The Stax-Volt Revue Tour 1967», er ikke tårene så langt unna da heller.
Det var en legendarisk turné, og opptaket fra Norge er helt unikt. Showet i Njårdhallen var den eneste konserten som ble filmet i sin helhet og ni måneder senere skulle Otis Redding dø i en flyulykke.
Men 1000 nordmenn fikk altså oppleve ham i Njårdhallen, blant dem tjue år gamle Rune-Haarek Dalby. Han forteller at han aldri har glemt Otis.
Salen kokte
- Man ble tatt av musikken og helt paralysert. Det er veldig underlig å se klipp fra konserten i dag. Jeg husker jeg hadde følelsen av at hele salen kokte, men når jeg nå ser klippene så sitter jeg helt stille. Jeg husker konserten som ekstremt inkluderende, publikum ble inkludert på en musikalsk, ikke visuell, måte. Vi fikk jo veldig nærkontakt med artistene, satt bare et par meter fra scenen, forteller Rune-Haarek til Dagbladet.no.
I tillegg til Otis Redding og Sam & Dave, spilte Arthur Conley, Eddie Floyd, The Mar-Keys og Booker T and The M.G's. For mange av artistene var det deres første tur over Atlanteren.
Europa var heller ikke vant til myke toner, på den tiden kunne man bare kjøpe soul i en nisjebutikk i Oslo. Konsertarrangør Barry Matheson satt opp to konserter med plass til 2500 hver kveld, men fikk bare 1000 besøkende den første og 1500 den andre. Han tapte 10 000 dollar på å få Otis til Norge.
- Jeg var nok forut for min tid. Det kom ikke så mange som jeg hadde håpet på, men det var noen av oss som hadde funnet ut hva Stax sto for, og det ble en fantastisk konsert. De kom til Oslo, hadde ikke lange lydprøver eller noe sånt, det var «what you see is what you get». Det ble en kanon fornøyelse emosjonelt, men ikke fullt så hyggelig økonomisk. Jeg tapte 60.000 kroner, som var mye penger den gangen. Men det er jo en historisk konsert, og det er stort å ha vært konferansier for den gjengen der, sa Matheson til Dagsavisen.
Alternativ til rock
For Rune-Haarek var soulen et alternativ til rocken som dominerte ungdomskulturen i 1967.
- Jeg vokste opp på Veitvet og der var det nok rock'n'roll, både som musikk og spenninger mellom mennesker. Det var mye slåssing. Soulmusikken gikk rett i hjertet på oss som ville ha de litt roligere, forteller han til Dagbladet.no.
NRK-opptakene har vært vist i klipp tidligere, men aldri som en helhet. Av konsertens nitti minutter, er syttifem foreviget på tape. Rune Haarek husker Otis og Sam & Dave best.
- Sam & Dave hadde noen snåle dansetrinn som for meg så ut som en blanding mellom Elvis, Fred Astaire og Muhammed Ali. Men jeg er jo voldsomt glad i Otis Redding. Da han sang «My Girl» var alt som det skulle være. Det som slår meg når jeg ser opptaket nå, er at jeg sitter sammen med vilt fremmede, men likevel føltes det som en familiekonsert. Det var helt hallelujah-stemning, sier Rune Haarek Dalby.
